چکیده

This paper analyzes optimal contracts in a linear hidden-action model with normally distributed returns possessing two moments that are governed jointly by two agents, who can observe each others’ effort levels and draft enforceable side–contracts on chosen effort levels and realized returns. After showing that standard constraints, resulting in incentive–contracts, may fail to ensure implementability, we examine (centralized) collusion–proof contracts and (decentralized) team–contracts. We prove that optimal team–contracts provide the highest implementable returns to the principal. In other words, the principal may restrict attention to outsourcing/decentralization without any loss of generality. Moreover, situations in which incentive–contracts are collusion– proof, thus implementable, are fully characterized. Journal of Economic Literature Classification Numbers: D82; J30; M12.

Communication, cooperation and collusion in team tournaments - An experimental study

We study the effects of communication in an experimental tournament between teams. When teams, rather than individuals, compete for a prize there is a need for intra-team coordination in order to win the inter-team competition. Introducing communication in such situations may have ambiguous effects on effort choices. Communication within teams may promote higher efforts by mitigating the intern...

Stackelberg Beats Cournot: on Collusion and Efficiency in Experimental Markets*

We report on an experiment designed to compare Stackelberg and Cournot duopoly markets with quantity competition. We implement both a random matching and a fixed-pairs version for each market. Stackelberg markets yield, regardless of the matching scheme, higher outputs than Cournot markets and, thus, higher efficiency. For Cournot markets, we replicate a pattern known from previous experiments....

Covert Channels for Collusion in Online Computer Games

Collusion between partners in Contract Bridge is an oft-used example in cryptography papers and an interesting topic for the development of covert channels. In this paper, a different type of collusion is discussed, where the parties colluding are not part of one team, but instead are multiple independent players, acting together in order to achieve a result that none of them are capable of ach...

Relational Contracts With and Between Agents

Firms often use both objective/verifiable and subjective/non-verifiable performance measures to provide employees with effort incentives. We study a principal/multi-agent model in which a verifiable team-based performance measure and nonverifiable individual performance measures (one for each agent) are available for contracting. A problem with tying rewards to non-verifiable measures is that t...
